Outdoor fitness classes have gone high-tech! We are thrilled to report that the new headsets, funded by Enhance West Van, have allowed our group fitness classes to immediately move outdoors in the wake of recent Public Health restrictions.

In good times, we can often overlook the most vulnerable people in our community, but COVID has brought their needs to the forefront of our minds and our hearts.

 

In early April 2020, Enhance West Van responded to the Covid-19 pandemic and the needs of North Shore families who were struggling to put food on their table. Now, almost a year later, we are hearing from the community on just how crucial this support has been and how essential it is to their future wellbeing. Enhance West Van's flagship PumpkinFest event has been canceled for 2020. Although this was to be PumpkinFest's 10th anniversary, the current uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic means that the event scheduled to take place on October 4 will no longer proceed.

 

PumpkinFest has cumulatively raised over $320,000 for the enhancement of programs and services at the West Vancouver Community Centre.

On behalf of Enhance West Van and the West Vancouver Firefighters Charitable Society, we want to thank the community for your generous donations. Not only did the Birthday Rescue Operation fund raise over $5,000 to support the COVID-19 food security programs in West Vancouver, but it put smiles on the faces of so many. Between May 5 and June 15, the Birthday Rescue Operation made 69 visits in our community to celebrate birthdays, graduations and anniversaries. The Birthday Rescue Operation is now finished.

This new society-funded program is coming to West Vancouver Community Centre this summer! The LIFT program is an exciting group exercise format that features targeted muscular strength and endurance training using barbells and weight plates to strengthen and tone muscles.

 

The new LIFT classes will be offered on our drop-in group exercise schedule. This new format is fun but also functional as your instructor will lead you through foundational movements such as squats, hinges, rotations and pull and press movements that are the basis of functional fitness and movement competency.

The WVCCS is proud to have designed and installed signage in 13 languages to welcome all members of our community to the West Vancouver Community Centre, Ice Arena and Aquatic Centre.

The WVCCS was extremely pleased to announce a $700,000 donation from the Lalji family. This generous donation will enhance programs, services and equipment at the West Vancouver Community Centre, Aquatic Centre and Ice Arena to benefit community needs. In recognition of this gift, the West Vancouver Community Centre Atrium was named the Lalji Family Atrium. 

The WVCCS is committed to engaging and building the community of West Vancouver through various events, services and programs throughout the year. Thank you to everyone who supported these events in 2018!

 

Winter Solstice Lantern Making Festival

Don't miss this free event on Saturday, December 22 from 2–3:30 p.m. to make winter solstice lanterns and at 4:30 p.m. walk with us to the Dundarave Festival of Lights. This event is for everyone— friends and families, children and seniors and everyone in between.

The WVCCS underwent a comprehensive community consultation process on the Emerging Vision in Spring 2018. On July 9, 2018, the District of West Vancouver Council unanimously approved that a District-led steering committee be established to further define details of the plan and explore potential funding models. We are looking forward to working with the District and the community to further this process.
